The complex and intersecting challenges we face require visionary leadership and whole hearted participation from everyone.  Strong connected neighbourhoods with engaged citizens are the foundation.

A functional democracy relies on an informed and engaged community. City council can only make decisions on behalf of citizens if it understands their concerns and perspectives. Let’s make sure that everyone’s voices can be heard, not just every four years. Transparency and accountability are values that I bring to Nelson City Council.

We need to look around the table and ask ourselves who is missing. Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work needs to happen at every level of our community, including governance. 

How can promote engaged democracy in Nelson?

• Participatory Budgeting
• Youth Representation on Council – (Fernie is a great example)
• Making council meetings accessible, in person or remotely. (For important meetings, providing Snacks, child care, door prizes)
• Promoting and protecting use of public spaces
• Town halls, conversation cafes, council being accessible in the community
